Early this year the Horsham Writers Circle held a ‘Writers’ Get-Together’ in Horsham Library, inviting the district’s word-smiths to come along to plan some writing for a celebratory book – “Write Around Horsham” – by way of a tribute to our much appreciated town, its surrounds, and its literary heritage.
And, thanks to the commitment and imagination of the veritable army of local scribes accepting the challenge with gusto, and the sterling work of the editorial team, the excellent book is now in print and available, a considerable, landmark achievement.
Our district has long been a haven for outstanding writing from Shelley, Hilaire Belloc, Hammond Innes and many more revered authors, and Write Around Horsham, with its stunning cover designed by Sian Johnson, perpetuates that tradition with over forty contributions in a wide range of genres. The Circle’s year of special events included a monthly series of booklets linked with the Museum’s ‘Literary Horsham’ theme, on some of the many literary figures associated with our district, a number of whose work is featured in the book (the booklets are available to download in PDF form from horshamwriters.co.uk).
Write Around Horsham was launched at a special evening at Horsham Library, when the writers were invited to read from their contributions in an imaginatively scripted presentation, Bryan Webster, Chairman of Horsham Writers Circle telling the District Post: “When suggesting the book we hoped for a really lively mixture of imaginative and factual pieces, and that’s what happened! There are adventure stories featuring action, fantasy, romance, thrills, psychology, horror, historical and science fiction, a legend or two, stunning poetry and some wonderfully descriptive factual items, all honouring Horsham and the wider district. The winning poems of the Friends of Horsham Park ‘Poets’ Corner’ competition have also been included in the book.”
An ideal stocking filler, Write Around Horsham is published by KDP and is available from Amazon at the bargain price of £5.02. A Kindle version is available for just £0.98.
Summing up the presentation event, Bryan Webster said: “It was an excellent evening – the first time the authors had seen the work of the other writers, and their entertaining readings inspired us all. The book is a success story – an absolute delight – full of variety and quality writing beyond our expectations!”
Horsham Writers Circle was formed in 1987 and meets in the town on the third Thursday of the month.
