IT company shares advice on cybersecurity over Christmas

Over the Christmas and New Year break, many families will give desktops, laptops, and tablets as gifts and spend more time online. It’s important to stay safe online with both new and old devices, especially when shopping for Boxing Day and New Year sales.

Woodstock IT, a local IT support and computer repair company based in Horsham, are experts in cybersecurity and the latest techniques to protect your devices and personal details.

We spoke with Julian Shelley, founder of Woodstock IT, to share his professional advice on how to stay safe online.

Advice for households

“Ensure that all of your home devices have a good quality antivirus product installed, should they require it (iPhones and iPads are the exception). Our software of choice is ESET but there are many options available depending on your needs and users.”

In addition to installing protection software, parents should also be proactive in updating the firmware of broadband routers.

“Running the latest firmware is very important as it reduces the vulnerability of your internet connection and can stop issues before they arise. The recent KRACK vulnerability means there are possibly millions of unsecured devices, causing unnecessary risks to users.”

Standard advice also applies; check for ‘https’ at the start of website addresses to make sure they are secure, be aware of spam shopping campaigns and be very careful when connecting to public WiFi, or avoid this altogether.

Keep children safe online

Safety for children online is always advancing and should be a priority across all connected devices. Installing a virus protection software is essential.

“Where possible, make use of parental controls, and check that any controls in place are working. Depending on a child’s age, supervise their internet use.”

“If you can, take time to research top websites that offer child-friendly versions, such as YouTube. The streaming service has a specific kid’s version with a set of parental controls, helping you feel confident in the videos they have access to.”
