Council’s grant fund provides new home for local family

A Horsham district family in housing need is set to benefit from a new home as a result of a local landlord receiving funds from Horsham District Council’s Empty Property Grant Funding Scheme.

The news comes during “National Empty Homes Week”, an initiative run by “Empty Homes” a national campaigning charity that promotes action by national and local government to tackle the waste of unoccupied homes and to encourage their use to provide affordable housing, helping to tackle the national housing shortage.

Landlord Allan Snuggs applied for funding from the council to fully renovate a two-bedroomed flat in north Horsham which had been left empty for many months.

The council’s Housing Services team then facilitated the letting of the flat to a local family who were in housing need.

Bringing vacant homes back into use, by offering advice, providing Empty Property Grant funding and, where necessary, taking enforcement action, is a key priority for the council. Over the last six years, the council has re-purposed and forced the sale of a number of houses which have been left empty for prolonged periods of time.

Commenting on the ongoing achievements of Horsham District Council to bring vacant homes back into use, Cabinet Member for Housing and Public Protection Cllr Kate Rowbottom said: “Vacant homes are such a waste of good housing, so I am delighted that a local family is now going to be living in this renovated property.

“It is crucial that we continue to maintain a robust empty homes strategy, taking a positive approach to tackling empty homes in the private housing sector.

“Empty properties are wasted homes, when we have increasing numbers of people facing the threat of homelessness.”

Landlord Allan Snuggs added: “It has been good to give something back to the local community. Horsham District Council’s empty homes grant money has helped me create a new home for a family in need.

“It’s a win, win situation really; I benefit from funds to renovate the property and the council provides tenants with a new home.”
