Madama Butterfly and Tosca at The Hawth

The Russian State Opera present two of Puccini’s best loved operas Madama Butterfly and Tosca at The Hawth this month.

Madama Butterfly, one of Giacomo Puccini’s most popular operas, will be staged on Tuesday 12 September. Set in Japan at the turn of the century, Madame Butterfly is among the most colourful and exotic of all operas, telling the story of a doomed love affair between an American naval officer and his young Japanese bride, whose self-sacrifice and defiance of her family leads to tragedy. The compelling tale of Madama Butterfly contains some of the most beautiful arias written, One Fine Day and Love Duet, as well as the Humming Chorus have been popular with opera-goers for over a century.

On Wednesday 13 September, the company present a beautiful production of the greatest opera classic, Tosca. Originally set in Rome in 1800s, this melodrama, where love and politics collide, and murder takes place at the highest level, tells the story of two idealistic lovers, Tosca and Cavaradossi. Their trust is set to be tested by Scarpia, the ruthless police officer who has no boundaries. Scarpia has sentenced Cavaradossi to death. The officer is prepared to let Cavaradossi go if Tosca is willing to spend the night with him…

Two of the most emotionally engaging and popular operas of all time, both Madama Butterfly and Tosca feature a live orchestra, with over 30 musicians, and are sung in Italian with English Surtitles.

Performance: Tuesday 12 and Wednesday 13 September. Tickets: £34 (Discounts £32.50) or book to see both operas for £59, available from the Box Office: 01293 553636 or online: hawth.co.uk
