On Saturday 22, July staff and residents at Westlake House Care Home in Horsham were joined by others from the community for their summer party and charity fundraiser, which saw more than £500 raised for the Connor Saunders Foundation.
The event was great fun and guests enjoyed live musical entertainment, as well as delicious home-cooked food served up by the home’s talented Head Chef.
For many, the highlight of the afternoon was when a brave member of staff, Clinical Development Nurse, Helen Rooke, shaved her head in a bid to gain donations for the Connor Saunders Foundation.
The Connor Saunders Foundation is a small charity set up in memory of 19 year old Connor Saunders, who tragically died in 2012 on a night out with friends. After his death, Connor saved the lives of five other people, through organ donation, and the Foundation strives to continue his legacy of life-saving, by promoting organ donation and providing first aid training and heart defibrillators to schools and football clubs. The charity also aims to provide qualified football coaching for people with physical or learning disabilities.
Connor’s mother, Darran Saunders, his Nana and his uncle attended the event, to join in the celebrations and see Helen complete her challenge in aid of their Foundation.
All money raised from the raffle at the event was also donated to the Connor Saunders Foundation. This helped to raise more than £500. On completion of her challenge, Helen commented: “I decided to do a head shave after talking to my hairdresser about all the amazing work the Connor Saunders Foundation does in memory of Connor. I’m delighted we were able to raise so much money for this fantastic cause. Thank you so much to everyone who donated.”
Liz Higson, General Manager at Westlake House, said: “Everyone always looks forward to Westlake’s summer party and this year was extra special. Thank you to Connor Saunders’ wonderful family, who joined us for the day, and all our guests who came along to enjoy the day’s entertainment and support Helen as she shaved most of her hair off!”
