Horsham’s Laura Hollobon made her debut at the English Weightlifting Championships where she competed in the Women’s 58kg A Class and amazingly finished in 3rd place.
To make the achievement even more remarkable Laura only took up the sport 15 months ago and competed in her first competition as recently as last May. Since then she has seen a meteoric rise in her results, leading to last weekend’s superb result.
At the English Championships – held in Milton Keynes – Laura lifted 72kg in the Snatch and 84kg in the Clean and Jerk giving her a total of 156kg which was just 3kg short of the competitor who finished second. Although the English Championships are part of the qualifying competitions for the Australian 2018 Commonwealth Games, Laura is not targeting the Commonwealth’s due to it only being her first year of competing. She is instead focussing on getting to the qualifying total for the under 23 European Championships later this year with her next major competition being the Senior British Championships in July.
Laura, who lives in Horsham and works as a coach at Horsham Gymnastic Centre, said the result at the English Championships came as a surprise as she was looking to gain some national competition experience and had no real expectations of being so highly placed. Laura praised the work of her coach, Emma Hitchcock, saying “Emma has been my coach from day one and I owe her everything. I wouldn’t be competing in weightlifting if it was not for her and I am very grateful for all the time and effort she has put in for me. I am very pleased with my performance and I am now looking to improve my total going into the British Championships”.
