Dominant Hornets coast into round three

Sussex Senior Cup 2nd Round
Newhaven 2 – 5 Horsham

Horsham made light work of reaching the third round of the Sussex Senior Cup on Tuesday evening by recording a big victory at Newhaven’s wet and windy Trafalgar Road ground. Newhaven, who sit mid-table in the Southern Combination Football League Premier, were overrun by their higher league opponents in a match where the Hornets could have reached double figures if they had not taken their foot off the pedal when 4-0 up with less than 25 minutes played.
Liam MacDevitt started things off by scoring after 9 minutes, before Horsham doubled their lead through a Scott Edwards own goal in the 17th minute. Straight from the restart George Branford continued his good form in front of goal by hitting rampant Horsham’s third. If that was not the match done and dusted then it certainly was when Tom Lawley made it 4-0 with only 24 minutes played.
Five minutes into the second half Ollie Gill scored the fifth and with the match won Dom Di Paola made a number of changes and as Horsham understandably relaxed the match became a bit of a non-event as both sides for different reasons looked to the final whistle. The Hornets relaxed a little too much however and the host’s scored twice through Ryan Walton and Lee Robinson in the final two minutes to give the score a closer look than the balance of play and Horsham’s superiority reflected.
