Barns Green runners help people with cancer

Runners in the 34th Barns Green Half Marathon will be raising money to help people with cancer and other life-threatening problems.

Organisers have decided to make St Catherine’s Hospice at Crawley the event’s chosen charity this year. The event will also feature for the first time a 10km race.

Organisers say this year’s event promises to be bigger than ever as the organisers have introduceda 10km race to take place alongside the half marathon. Both take place on September 25 , with the half marathon starting at  10am and the 10km race at 10.20am. The 10km race will start at the same place as the Half Marathon and the finish will be beside the Green in Sandhill Road. The10km race which will be open to anyone over the age of 16 and like the Half Marathon will take place on closed roads and will follow part of the Half Marathon route. There will be an additional section of the 10km route that will take place in the grounds of Christ’s Hospital School. There will be the usual medals and prizes for the 10km race and the entrance fee will be £15 for affiliated runners and £17 for unaffiliated.

Race director Vernon Jennings said: “We are delighted to have St Catherine’s Hospice as our official charity this year as it provides a unique and essential service for our region. Each year the charityneeds to raise £6million in voluntary income to ensure it can keep providing vital services to those who need them.  We hope that everyone who takes part in this year’s race or comes along to cheer on the runners will support the vital work that they do”.
