A woman who recovered from a stroke completed the London Marathon for her Horsham charity.
Determined Jill Wakeman suffered a serious attack in 2013 that left leaving her with no movement in the right-hand side of her body and incapable of saying anything other than ‘no’.
But when it came to overcoming her problems her response was definitely “yes”.
On leaving hospital after 10 weeks she was determined to show others what can be achieved with sheer hard work and enthusiasm. Over time Jill pushed herself to walk short distances and she slowly built up to running three times a week.
In 2015 Jill ran in the Brighton Half Marathon, supported by her three sons and one of their
girlfriends who ran together as a team. Jill and her youngest son applied for places in the London
Marathon but only Jill was successful. After much consideration Jill decided to take up the place
even though she still gets intermittent pain and loss of feeling in her right leg.
On Sunday Jill, along with 38,000 entrants, started the London Marathon on a cold and wet morning.
Jill was determined to complete the course and says she was overjoyed to cross the finishing line after running past Buckingham Palace.
Jill said: “I was nervous and excited about taking on this challenge. Successfully completing the
London Marathon has been a major milestone for me.”
Jill is raising money for the Phoenix Stroke Club at Horsham, where she has been a member and received support since January 2014. Jill joined the weekly Communication Group as it was hard for her to find the words she wanted to say and until this point had not been able to read. With the encouragement of volunteers and Jill’s commitment and tenacity she can now read, write and her speaking has improved.
Judy Clark, manager of the club said: “We are so proud of what Jill has achieved
both at the club and with her running. She is an inspiration and we are delighted she is raising
money for the Phoenix Club.” Jill , who is in her 50s, lives with her partner in Horsham. She is the owner of The Pinnacle Letting Company in Piries Place.
