Sussex Knockout Cup Final
East Grinstead 3 – 2 Horsham Ladies
At the end of a great season for Horsham Hockey Club the ladies were shaded in the Sussex Cup Final, but gave an excellent account of themselves, pressing and worrying higher league East Grinstead right to dying seconds of the match.
Team Manager Jane Denman told the District Post: “East Grinstead led 2-0 at half time and then scored again but the girls kept battling and in the last ten minutes we earned five short corners before Shiv Isaacs scored in open play from an aerial reverse stick strike. Then Louisa Denman netted a deflection from their keeper and we had a chance to equalise in the last seconds from another short corner but didn’t quite pull it off.” Club Chairman Nick Evans added: “To come back from three down against east Grinstead was a major achievement and we definitely finished the stronger of the two teams, despite being out of training. We just ran out of time to draw level, but it was great to see some of the youngsters playing and doing so well – Georgina Humphreys, Jemma Murphy and Rebecca Williams. With these girls plus the Malzer twins and others coming through, the future certainly looks bright for our ladies’ team. The men have had an outstanding season, which is the result of a lot of hard work and commitment by Dom Male, Duncan Howarth and the whole squad. Next year will be tough, of that there is no doubt, but they will now have a well earned rest and come back in August ready to face the challenge. I am confident that they will compete well at the highest level our men’s 1s will ever have played and I am excited by the prospect, especially with the junior sides also doing well.”
