Young jailbirds surrender at Carfax

Jail breakers gave themselves up in the centre of Horsham.

The team of youngsters had been on a fundraising ‘Jail Break’ in a wide area covering the coast and inland as far as Burgess Hill and Storrington.

Dressed in fancy costumes the pupils from Steyning Grammar School Sixth Form broke out at 8.15am from the school and headed for various points including Brighton, Hove, Shoreham, Southwick, Crawley, Lancing, Storrington, Portslade, Henfield, Burgess Hill, Haywards Heath and Horsham.

After their escapades they all gathered at the Horsham Bandstand to be recaptured at 1pm, watched by curious shoppers and other passers-by. Sixth Form College musicians played as the students were rounded up by their jailors.

The great escape from Steyning Grammar School saw 213 Year 13 students released for a day of fundraising, with the money raised this year going to Cancer Research UK in support of their national campaign for Kids and Teens. They raised about £5,000 and donations may still be made at  Just Giving site

Pictured are some of the scenes from the jailbreak.
