Saturday November 7 – SCFL Premier Division
Worthing 0 – 3 Horsham
Having been knocked out of two cup competitions in their previous two away games Horsham made no mistake in picking up all three league points at Worthing last weekend. The victory also lifted the Hornets up to second place in the table following Eastbourne Town’s shock home defeat to Wick & Barnham.
The windy and wet weather and the sodden pitch did not present ideal conditions for a footballing treat however and Horsham had to slog it out in a scrappy encounter to ensure the season’s goal of an immediate return to Ryman League football was kept on track.
The opening first 15 minutes were pretty unforgettable as both teams struggled to adapt to the pitch, and remain on their feet, but on 17 minutes the first piece of meaningful play resulted in the opening goal. A surprisingly good passing move, given the playing surface, between Mark Knee and Jordan Clark led to a through ball for Evan Archibald to chase onto and to find Terry Dodd who shot low passed the advancing home ‘keeper Evans.
Another opportunity for Dodd and a Mark Knee free kick was about the total of clear opportunities for Horsham to double their lead in the first half and it could have been worse when Gareth Williams cleared straight to Worthing’s Titus Patterson but luckily enough Patterson’s effort went straight at Williams for a simple save.
The second half saw much the same as the football suffered on the ever deteriorating pitch leading to a number of mistimed tackles. Patterson again came close to an equaliser for the hosts with a header and Clark had a free kick saved as the Hornets fought to get the all important second goal.
It was the Worthing ‘keeper Evans who gifted the Hornets the comfort of a two goal lead when on 77 minutes he horribly mishit a clearance straight at Pamment who put Archibald in to fire passed the errant ‘keeper. The game was finally wrapped up with 2 minutes of normal time remaining when Dodd got his second of the afternoon after his run and low shot found the net.
