YM lose out to late Loxwood penalty

A 98th minute Mark Cave penalty helped in-form Loxwood come from behind to narrowly beat Horsham YMCA 2-1 in the first round of the Sussex Senior Challenge Cup on Tuesday evening.
On a wet evening at Gorings Mead, Dave Brown’s coolly curled free kick found the far corner to give the hosts the lead seven minutes ahead of half time, but Loxwood quickly levelled as Ollie Gill fired home to make it 1-1 just before the break.
The home side created the better chances during a plain second period, but the game’s late drama favoured the visitors as Cave confidently slammed home from the spot after Michael Wood was brought down in the box by Dan Evans, seven unexplainable minutes into added time.
The loss marks YM’s third cup exit in less than a week, after crashing out of the FA Cup away at Aveley last week and then losing in the FA Vase against Croydon last Saturday. The impressive Magpies, meanwhile, were recording their ninth win on the spin as they avenged August’s 3-1 league defeat to YM at Plaistow Road.
Assistant YM manager, Dean Potter, commented: “I’ve got mixed emotions. I thought that was probably our best performance this season. We played some good football.
It’s always disappointing conceding in the ninetieth minute, especially when we had the ball up the other end and one ball in behind undoes us, but that’s football. I don’t think that there should have been eight minutes of injury time, but you can go on and on about it and at the end of the day we’ve lost the game 2-1. I’m upbeat because I think the performances haven’t been there recently, but today we came out and we showed some great energy. I wouldn’t say that we bossed the whole game, but we played really well.”
