Roffey go second after overwhelming Eastbourne

Saturday June 6 – Sussex Premier League

Eastbourne v Roffey

Eastbourne 153 all out (45.2 overs)  Roffey 156-5 (34 overs)

Roffey won by 5 wickets

Roffey won comfortably at the Saffrons, needing little more than half their allocation of overs and only a substantial late order partnership saved Eastbourne from an even more comprehensive defeat.

Roffey put Eastbourne in to bat, Leigh Harrison taking an early wicket before finishing with 3-27. A very nasty accident followed when Eastbourne captain Luke Tomsett took a blow on the head from a rapid Stuart Whittingham delivery, necessitating urgent hospitalisation precluding him from any further part in the game. Wickets continued to tumble, Ben Manenti and George Fleming taking two each as Eastbourne slid to 98-8 before opening bowler David Twine came out swinging. Twine hit 10 fours and 2 sixes, his bludgeoning 72 enabling Eastbourne to recover to a comparatively respectable 153.

With 64 overs to get the runs Roffey put on 58 for the first wicket, Josh Fleming making 40 until an unbeaten 53 from Mike Norris secured victory with 30 overs still in the bank. Roffey, with four wins from five games, move up to second on 123 points five behind Preston Nomads and clear of the next three clubs who have all played one game more.

Skipper Josh Fleming told the District Post: “Had we batted first we would have wanted 220 or 230 so when we had them eight down for under a hundred they were on the ropes – until David Twine came in and whacked it. But, another good team performance enabled us to win without too much further trouble.”
