Summer is just around the corner, and with that in mind The Malt Shovel are getting ready for their annual beer and music festival which promises three days of quality real ale and great local, live music.
Running for three days from from May 1, to May 3, over the bank holiday weekend. It will feature four acts a day, a beer tent and a BBQ.
Landlord, Sam Clayton took over the pub in 2013 and since then has been working to transform it into a traditional local pub with a modern personality.
Sam told The District Post: “When we first got here the pub felt unloved. Since then we’ve worked hard and had a full redecoration, breathing new life back into what is a Horsham staple and given it a fresh look.”
Renovations included stripping back the old floor, remodeling the bar top and opening up the bar area.
The Malt Shovel now boasts a much wider range of drinks too with six ales on at all times, featuring at least two Sussex breweries and a large number of bottled craft beers, cask ciders and a wide range of premium spirits including 13 different tequilas, 10 gins, 12 vodkas and 24 varieties of whisky.
They are also now offering a lunch menu that includes home-made burgers, filled sandwiches and bar snacks. All food is freshly made on site and ingredients are locally sourced with meat from New Street Butchers.
Sam previously spent 14 years running cocktail bars in London, and he wanted to make The Malt Shovel an environment for everyone and create a safe and friendly atmosphere for customers. Sam added: “Pub landlords were once considered pillars of the local community. I want to hark back to that providing high standards, good beer, premium ales and a welcoming, friendly environment.
The Malt Shovel’s annual festival is a big part of their packed live music and events calendar.
Sam said: “We love music, we have live music here every Saturday and open mic nights every first and third Thursday of the month and four times a year we do an originals showcase. We hand-pick singers, songwriters and bands to perform as it’s often difficult for original acts to get into pubs.”
The Malt Shovel holds at least six live music events a month and they even have a house guitar for those spontaneous sing-alongs.
The annual music and beer festival will include a wide variety of local talent as well as a beer tent open daily serving 28 beers including local ales and the best of British as well as ciders. There will also be a BBQ each day.
Acts performing this year will be announced on the pubs Facebook and Twitter feeds. You can follow them at www.facebook.com/maltshovelhorsham and @themalty.
