The District Post is organising the Caffe Italia competition this year as part of the Horsham Piazza Italia fortnight in the lead up to the event this Easter.
The competition will take place from Friday, March 13, to April 10, and Carfax business Crates Local are participating in this years event.
Co-owner Marion Carter said: “It’s all about the coffee we freshly grind our coffee for each cup but it really starts with the beans from Horsham Coffee Roaster. They roast in small batches and all of it is traceable, so we know exactly where it comes from and we know the grower gets a fair price for their beans. Our roasters are very passionate about supplying premium, ethically traded, freshly roasted coffee.”
Horsham Coffee Roaster specialise in several blends and their unique bold blend used daily by Crates Local is made up of beans from Brazil, Peru and Rwanda. They also supply a decaf blend using spring water and is chemical free. Many of their blends are available to buy direct from Crates who will also grind to suit how customers make their coffee at home, a service unique in Horsham.
Marion added: “The milk is also very important in creating the perfect cup of coffee. We use a local dairy, Downsview in Ringmer who supply fresh milk that is far less processed than other milk to make a better coffee. This non-homogonised milk is just like how milk used to be when it was delivered to your doorstep with the cream on top.”
When it comes to actually combining these crucial ingredients together, Crates is proud their baristas are fully trained and absolutley passionate about what they do. Marion explained: “They are trained at the roastery where they try all the different coffees and learn the entire process. It’s important to do it properly.” She added: “I think we’re going to put up strong competition in this year’s competition. Even the sprinkles on top of our hot chocolate are quality fair-trade.” Of course in addition to fine coffee, Crates offers other drinks and a wide range of food to eat in or take away made freshly from the local produce they sell from their shop which was forerunner to the cafe.
