It’s been just over a year since David Thompson and his wife Rebecca opened local music shop Sussex Soundhouse in Horsham.
Following the closure last year of Horsham Music in East Street, David saw the opportunity to open a new shop in Blatchford Close, and the last year has been an adventure for David and his wife.
David said: “The opportunity came up when the Horsham shop closed its doors. I bought all the stock from Horsham Music for the new shop here in Blatchford Close. We stripped it out in a day and sat on all the stock for around two to three months as we couldn’t find anywhere to go. Then we found a vacancy in these units and they are fantastic.”
The last year has seen the business grow with plenty of new stock and further plans to expand online.
“We have the Amazon site we sells goods from and we are planning on launching a website next year and when the e-commerce side of the business launches we’re going to be offering around 30,000 products.”
Sussex Soundhouse currently stocks musical instruments geared towards entry level to intermediate musicians, and they offer a wide range of musical accessories catering to the local community.
“We offer honest, professional advice to customers. I’ll recommend what best suits you, I won’t sell someone something more expensive than what the best need.”
David and Rebecca have described the last year as a huge learning curve and they’ve learnt a lot, building up their stock and offering the best customer service to their customers.
David said: “It’s a one stop shop for musicians, people come in for accessories, repairs or for their first guitar. We can do all manner of repairs, clean ups and can source parts, we also offer amp repairs.”
Sussex Soundhouse stocks guitars, ukuleles, keyboards, drum kits, amplifiers, harmonicas, music books and even Aulos recorders which you may recognise from primary school music lessons!
“We also take orders for certain products as we can’t display every item in store. If it’s music related we’ll help you find it.
“I buy what I personally like. Any instruments we stock I have played and handled before buying so everything we have in store is hand picked.
“People often assume it’s cheaper to buy online and it’s not always the case, i’ve found that I can compete quite easily, and in some cases you could be buying products which may have been sitting in warehouses for 10 years or more, the quality difference is huge. Buying here we can guarantee quality, new gear.”
David is also a guitarist and teacher who works for the Music Trust, teaching guitar making him a familiar face around town.
So if you are looking to buy your first instrument, need some advice or just need some new strings pop into Sussex Soundhouse.
