The Milner family from Horsham are holding fundraising days in order to raise money so that two-year-old Emily Milner can travel to American and have a life changing operation. The first event will be a charity quiz night on Saturday, May 17.
Emily was born prematurely at 29 weeks and suffered brain damage at birth. She has cerebral palsy and is tube fed, cannot sit, crawl or walk and is the size of a 10-month-old baby. Emily’s mother, Nickie, says that Emily is a determined little princess and is hoping to raise £65,000 so that Emily can have a Selective Dorsal Rhizotomy (SDR) operation to be able to walk.
Nickie told The District Post: “Emily needs to be aged three to four to have the operation and we need £6,000 just for her to be assessed to see if she will be eligible. We have a year or so to fundraise to we’ve just thrown ourselves into it.
“We are using the charity Tree of Hope to look after all our fundraising money which is used to pay for equipment and bills and they can also claim gift aid. The NHS don’t provide everything and the equipment often needs adapting. The operation isn’t available in the UK so we are aiming to go to America for it.
“My son Jack is 10 and he has taken it upon himself to write to companies asking for donations, I’m really proud of him.”
Nickie is planning a black tie ball later on in the year with a three course meal and auction. She will be contacting businesses and sponsors and is hoping for prize donations. So far she has managed to secure some great prizes such as afternoon tea at the Ritz.
At the charity quiz night which is taking place at the Norfolk Arms from 7.30pm on Saturday, May 17, there will also be a pudding auction, retro sweet station and a raffle.
Prizes in the raffle include a signed Brighton and Hove Albion shirt, afternoon tea at the Nutfield Priory Hotel and Spa and family day out tickets.
Tickets for the quiz night are £10 per person and there will be a hog roast and buffet available too. Teams of 6-8 can still sign up for the quiz. To book, email email@example.com.
