Police are investigating an arson attack on a Pulborough pub.
The owners of the White Hart, which is currently closed while refurbishment works are under way, returned to their home in Stopham Road shortly before 1pm on Sunday, May 18, and discovered a broken window, burn marks on the floor and a strong smell of petrol.
It is believed that the attack took place in the 48 hours before its discovery on Sunday. Police would like to hear from anyone who saw anyone acting suspiciously in the area during that time, even if it looked like someone appearing to check if the pub was open for business.
Chris Sinfield, Landlord of The White Hart said: “We are of course totally devastated and sick to the stomach that someone could do this. The Police have told us that this was clearly intended to be a warning, but by who we just don’t know.
“We don’t consider we have made any enemies whilst being at the pub. The fact that we could of been asleep upstairs whilst the pub burned is both extremely upsetting and worrying.”
Mr Sinfield added: “Unfortunately this will mean that the pub will not be open on May 24, and we have yet to establish a new opening date”
