The Southwater Skate Jam, which was due to take place on Saturday, September 14, has had to be cancelled due to vandalism at the Skate Park in Southwater County Park.
The ramp is currently undergoing refurbishment and repair to damage caused by previous vandalism. This work was due to be finished at the end of this week in time for the Skate Jam.
The contractor Radii Ramps came on site this morning, to find that the top of one of the platforms had been pushed down overnight, which puts the structural integrity of the whole end of the ramp in doubt. It is estimated that to repair this criminal damage will cost around £4000, which is in addition to the £6000 cost of the work already being undertaken. The extent of the damage is such that repair is not possible in the timescale.
A Parish Council spokesperson said: “We all have worked so hard with the District Council and our sponsors to put on this Skate Jam, and are so disappointed that mindless criminal damage has forced us to cancel it. We have had to fence off the ramp for health & safety reasons, so it is now closed until further notice. The Council will now have to decide whether the ramp is worth saving, as there is only a finite amount of funding available.”
If anyone has information relating to this criminal damage, could they contact the Parish Office on 01403 733202.
