Town’s oldest toy shop closes down

Horsham’s oldest toyshop, Goodacres Toymaster in Carfax, has closed. Owners Roy and Pauline Ringer have also closed the Bognor Regis shop.

Their daughter Lisa Strudwick said in a statement: “We are totally devastated that we have had to shut down both shops. Unfortunately due to rents rising, competition for larger stores and mainly the internet we didn’t stand a chance of competing!

“My parents worked very hard and ended up very stressed trying to keep our family business of over 70 years going. We have accepted now it had to come to an end before financial ruin.

“Mum and Dad are going to enjoy an early retirement, playing golf, spending time in Portugal and making the most of their young grandchildren. We would like to say a big thank you to all our staff and customers over the years that have stuck by us.”

The Horsham Facebook page received a huge number of comments and memories of the well-known shop which many residents had grown up with. Miranda Mitchell posted: “The internet is no substitute for browsing and great service.”

  1. How sad – Goodacres was a key feature throughout my whole childhood. We used to love it as kids – looking in the windows and buying from there. The carfax was synonymous with Goodacres. Wishing the owners very good luck in their new life and I hope you have as much happiness as you gave to thousands of of us kids over the years. You deserve it.
