This August Jonathan Whymark will embark on a nine-day solo expedition to one of the most remote parts of the world. He will hike the 202-mile Arctic Circle Trail in Greenland, raising money for Help the Hospices.
Jonathan spent more than seven years in the armed forces and has always had a connection with the great outdoors. He previously undertook the Three Peaks Challenge for the Fire Service Benevolent Fund, and the Devizes to Westminster canoe event for Help for Heroes.
He told The District Post: “It’s something I’ve always fancied doing and in the process of doing it I wanted to raise some money for a good cause.
“The main reason I chose Help the Hospices is that they are a small charity, they do a lot of good work, and my wife’s sister sadly died of cancer about a year ago in a hospice in Hampshire. They really looked after her well, and they are a charity that don’t get a lot of exposure.”
Jonathan has spent a lot of time hiking in Wales, getting to grips with the hilly terrain and familiarising himself with his gear. He has also been doing a lot of running and cycling locally to get into shape for the difficult challenge ahead.
Jonathan added: “I think the toughest part of the challenge will be the solitude, that will be hard. There are only two settlements and they are Kangerlussuaq, which is the start point and the finish point, Sisimiut.
Jonathan has teamed up with Mi Spa in the Carfax in order to hold a pamper party with the aim to raise a minimum of £2,000. Jonathan said: “Mi Spa has been incredibly supportive of the cause and a whole range of treatments are on offer.
“I can personally vouch for their massages. It’s relaxing, beautifully laid out and very professional.”
Ian McDonald at Mi Spa said: “We see it as a great way to give back to the local community. All proceeds from bookings taken now will be going to charity.”
The pamper party takes place on Sunday, April 28, between 10am and 4pm at Mi Spa, 33-34 Carfax. You must call ahead on 01403 250777 to book a space. All proceeds on the day will go to the charity. You can also donate by texting HTHC56 followed by the amount you wish to donate to 70070.
