Man steals cash from elderly woman in Billingshurst

Police are seeking a man who stole cash from an elderly resident at a Billingshurst care home.

The 81-year old was in her flat at about 12.15pm on Friday, March 22, when a man came to the door saying he was selling household items such as tea towels to raise money for himself.

She gave him from her purse what she thought was a small amount of cash and he left. She then realised that he had taken more than £100 and had left no goods.

The suspect is described as white, about 6’1″, and aged in his twenties, with a long face, and short wavy mousy hair. He wore a dark short jacket, and dark bottoms and was carrying a large holdall.

A Sussex Police spokesman said: “This was a nasty deception carried out on an elderly lady in her own home. If you saw the man in the area on Friday, perhaps calling door to door, or can help with any other information, please call us on 101 quoting serial 0579 of 22/3. You can also call independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

“We always remind residents, especially the elderly, to be very cautious when dealing with cold callers of any sort. Demand evidence of identity and a genuine reason for their being there. If in doubt keep them out. If they are still present dial 999 or if you have any other suspicions about such callers call us on 101 at any time.”
