Fundraiser organises Spring Ball and bike trek to Paris

Next month local fundraiser Ken Pierce will be holding a Spring Charity Ball at South Lodge Hotel in support of Action Medical Research and The MPS Society.

Mr Pierce will also be taking part in a sponsored cycle over four days in July from London to Paris in order to raise money for Horsham-based Action Medical Research.

The MPS Society is a charity which provides support to individuals affected by Mucopolysaccharide Disease in the UK.

MPS is a very rare disease. There is a continuous process in the body of replacing used materials and breaking them down for disposal. Children born with MPS are unable to produce one of the enzymes essential for this process. This means used materials cannot be broken down and remain stored in cells of the body. The disease is progressive and can lead to death in childhood.

Mr Pierce said: “The ball is being held in order to raise money for these two charities. I want to raise £3,000. I’m aiming for £1,400 for Action Medical, and the rest for The MPS Society.

“The ball will be the main driver for it and will feature an auction, a silent auction, and a raffle. There will be a band and a disco, and we’ve also got a three course meal provided by Camelia. On arrival guests will enjoy a drinks reception and there will be a red carpet and professional photography.”

There will be around £3,500 worth of prizes including mountain bikes, flying lessons, a Bentley for a weekend, spa treatments, show jumping tickets, and golf lessons. The event runs from 7pm until 1am and is black tie.

Mr Pierce, who chose to raise money for these charities as his son lives with MPS, said: “At the time he was a good inline hockey player and he had a problem with stiff fingers, and at the same time he started to have a problem with his eyes.

“We took him to a consultant and he was diagnosed with MPS. He has a milder form, which is why he is a healthy adult. At the time there was no treatment, but there were medical trials being conducted and just a year later a treatment came out, which is an infusion he receives every week.”

“Action Medical Research is  Horsham based and I lived in Horsham for around 20 years, so it’s nice to support a local charity. Also their work is to research with an aim to eradicate and treat disease, and it feels that there is some good synergy between them and The MPS Society.”
