An event co-ordinating board gaming groups, clubs, retailers, and suppliers around the world is taking place on Saturday, March 30, and Horsham’s Battlequest Games is running its very own event in the Carfax to celebrate the event.
International Tabletop Day is a reminder to spend more time and strengthen the bonds with friends and family by playing games together.
The event also represents the one year anniversary of the hit Youtube show TableTop hosted by Wil Wheaton, of Star Trek fame.
Nik Butler, District Post columnist, said: “In the last year the view and the vision for boardgames and tabletop gaming has been changing.
“Web Show Tabletop is a 30 minute format show in which Wil Wheaton invites friends and media colleagues to play a board game.
“It provided a chance to demonstrate the gameplay, quality and interaction levels of the games and it was a success that caught retailers and suppliers off guard.
“In place of trying to sell direct from their Website they encouraged viewers to visit their local Gamestores to buy and play more games and it worked.
“It’s a good example of how the internet is driving sales to the high street instead of taking them away.
“It’s fortunate is falls on the same day as Piazza Italia, this is the first event of its kind in terms of tabletop games on an international level.
“It’s a chance to switch off the TV and the computer, and as a parent it’s a cunning way to encourage my children to read and do mathematics.”
Currently Nik is in talks with suppliers to arrange freebies and prizes for the event.
Owner of Horsham board game shop BattleQuest Games, Andy Wakefield said: “I think the event is a very good idea, the growth of the Tabletop YouTube channel has got a lot more people into board games. They are trying to support the retailers which is good news.
“I want it to be a fun day of board gaming, where people can try something a little different. For the day itself we’re running board gaming from 11am to 4pm.
“We will be playing the games which are on the tabletop channel to encourage people in who are new to board gaming.
“I want to dispel the image of being a geek to play games.”
The event is free and ties in with International Tabletop day and Piazza Italia.
There will be table set up in the day for people to come and play a selection of different games seen on the show including Munchkin, Dixit, Fluxx, and Catan.
