TV wine expert Charles Metcalfe handed the annual Henfield White Hart trophy for top sloe gin maker to Duncan Clough.
His was one of nearly 20 entries from the village in the sixth year of the competition.
The retired head teacher said: “I’m over the moon to win. There was a secret recipe – and it seems to have worked.”
The People’s Choice winner was Lisa Ross-Talbot, of Henfield.
Trevor Simmons, who organises the competition with wife Jo, said: “We were surprised by the number of entries considering the shortage of sloes this year.”
Mr Metcalfe, co-chairman of the International Wine Challenge, said: “Despite the dreadful weather this year and the scarcity of sloes, entrants put in a lot of effort for the competition.”
Results are based on blind tastings by guests and the judge’s marks.
