Lucky escape for drivers on the A281

Road-users, pedestrians and residents were fortunate not to be in the wrong place at the wrong time as this giant tree crashed onto the A281.

Roffey resident Stuart Scarry, who sent this photograph to The Resident, told us: “My partner Gaye Wise and I were returning from Devil’s Dyke on my diesel-powered Triumph Tiger (motorbike) at about 3pm on Sunday. We had just ridden through Henfield and past the turn-off for Partridge Green and rounded the bend into Shermanbury when we came upon this incident.

“High winds were to blame as conditions were very blustery and the oak tree obviously caught the full force of the wind. Drivers were attempting to turn their cars around. The road was closed for the whole afternoon and finally opened that evening.”

Mr Scarry, editor of www.Dieselbike.net, added: “It was very lucky that nobody was hurt, because it was a big tree and a busy road.”
