Horsham and Crawley Samaritans have welcomed their 1,000th listening volunteer.
Director Gill Ross said: “It is quite a milestone. Whereas our callers can be any age, our volunteers need to be 18 or over, but the ‘over’ can mean 80+!”
The Samaritans organisation started in the City of London in 1953, to provide a listening service for people experiencing feelings of distress or despair, including those which could lead to suicide.
The Horsham and Crawley Samaritans branch was formed in 1973, operating from premises in Park Street before moving to the current offices at 21 Denne Road, Horsham.
Anyone who needs the listening service, or is interested in becoming a volunteer, can visit the branch, phone 01403 276273 or 01293 515151, or visit www.handcsams.org
